India Accelerates Defense Modernization: What Averages Pakistan's Fear?
New Delhi: Pakistan is "shaking with fear" as India rapidly modernizes its defense capabilities, including the development of Multiple Independently Targetable Reentry Vehicle (MIRV) technology and Hypersonic Ballistic Missiles. Indian analysts say these advancements demonstrate a significant shift in the country's military posture.
According to experts, India's investment in next-generation defense technologies has far-reaching implications for regional security dynamics. The country's efforts to develop hypersonic missiles pose a challenge to conventional missile defense systems, and have been described by Professor Dr. Zafar Nawaz Jaspal as a "significant leap" in India's defense capabilities.
Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the Hypersonic Technology Demonstrator Vehicle (HSTDV) has successfully completed tests, marking an important step toward operational hypersonic weapon systems. These missiles can travel at speeds over five times the speed of sound, rendering conventional defense systems ineffective.
India is also focusing on integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) into its military, with AI-equipped systems offering various advantages such as improved data analysis and decision-making. The integration of AI is expected to transform India's defense structure further, modernizing its security posture.
An analysis by the Indian Defense Research Wing highlights concerns regarding India's development of MIRV capabilities, including the potential extension of the Agni-VI missile. If developed, MIRV-equipped missiles would enhance India's nuclear deterrence, complicate defensive strategies for neighboring countries, and add a new dimension to its strategic missile program.
India has also made progress in its Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD) program, with successful tests of the two-tier B MD system designed to intercept threats at high altitude and low altitude levels. The deployment of this system is expected to provide significant protection against incoming missile threats, further strengthening India's defense posture.
The implications of these developments have raised concerns among regional powers. Experts warn that India's efforts to modernize its defense capabilities could alter the regional strategic balance, increasing security tensions in the process.
