Bengaluru: The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru has made history by ranking amongst the top 100 universities in the world offering computer science, according to the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings by Subject 2025. This achievement marks the first time an Indian higher education institution has received this recognition.
The rankings, which evaluate universities across 11 subjects, have placed IISc at a remarkable 99th position globally in the field of computer science. In previous years, IISc had ranked outside the top 200 for the same subject.
Delhi University (DU) is the only Indian university to be included among the world's best universities for law and psychology, ranking 301 or greater globally.
Other notable highlights from the rankings include:
- Oxford University ranks top in computer science, followed by the University of Cambridge and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
- Twenty-four Indian higher education schools have made it to the top universities list this year under the business and economics subject category, up from 15 last year.
- Institutes such as Amity University, KIIT University, and UPES have gained seats on the list with a rank band of 401-500.
The rankings also reveal that Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and Delhi University (DU) have moved up from the 501-600 band to the 401-500 band in the arts and humanities category.
This achievement highlights the growing reputation of Indian universities on the global stage, and IISc's ranking is expected to inspire a new generation of students and researchers in India.
