IISc Bengaluru Makes History, Ranked among World Top 100 Universities
Bengaluru, India - The Times Higher Education (THE) has announced its World University Rankings by Subject 2025, with Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, marking a milestone as the only Indian institution to rank amongst the top 100 universities in the world offering computer science.
This achievement is significant, as it marks the first time an Indian higher education institution has been ranked among the global elite. In last year's ranking, IISc led Indian universities by graduating among the 251-300 rankings worldwide for computer science.
Delhi University (DU), on the other hand, secured a spot in the world's top universities for law and psychology, with a ranking of 301 or greater. This is the only Indian university to achieve this feat in both categories.
The World University Rankings by Subject 2025 evaluated universities across 11 subjects, including arts and humanities, business and economics, computer science, education, engineering, law, life sciences, medicine and health, physical sciences, psychology, and social sciences.
According to THE, 53 Indian universities have secured positions among the world's top institutions for computer science, with IISc ranking 96th. This represents an improvement from last year's 47 universities that made it onto the list.
In business and economics subjects, a total of 24 Indian higher education schools made it to THE's top universities list this year, up from 15 in 2024. Institutes like Amity University, Noida; KIIT University, Bhubaneswar; UPES, Dehradun; and Delhi University (DU) have secured spots on the list with a rank band of 401-500.
Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and Delhi University (DU) have moved up to the 401-500 band in the arts and humanities category. Similarly, 14 Indian universities have maintained their spots among the world's top institutions for social sciences for 2025.
The rankings were topped by Oxford University, followed by the University of Cambridge and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
