Hypertension Awareness Campaign: Health Department Partners with International Service Organisations

In an effort to raise awareness about the causes and consequences of hypertension, which has emerged as a major factor behind diseases like heart attacks, kidney problems, and other vital organ issues, the Punjab Health Department has partnered with international service organisations across the country.

To mark World Hypertension Day on March 17th, various social and medical organisations, including Rotary Club president Tarsem Garg's Social Welfare Organisation, jointly organised workshops, seminars, poster-making competitions to create awareness about hypertension among locals.

"Having received instructions in connection with the aims of the National Programme for Prevention of Non-Communicable Diseases, we called meetings of office-bearers of various medical, social, educational and constitutional organisations for holding seminars, workshops and camps to spread awareness about the causes and consequences of hypertension," said Dr Jyoti Kapoor, SMO at Civil Hospital Ahmedgarh.

During a seminar organised by MGMN Senior Secondary School's local unit of Rotary Club, Dr Kapoor warned that irrational consumption of oily and junk food, excessive drinking, smoking, and a sluggish lifestyle are major factors behind diseases like hypertension, stroke, blindness, mental distress, tension, renal and hepatic disorders.

"By following the theme for this year 2025 - 'Measure your blood pressure accurately, control it, live longer' in letter and spirit, we can prevent many fatal emergencies," said Dr Puneet Dhawan, adding that accurate blood pressure measurement methods are crucial to combating low awareness rates worldwide, especially in low-to-middle-income areas.

Physicians observed that the disease is prevalent among urban populations than rural ones. During a workshop at DAV Senior Secondary School, medical experts noted that engaging healthcare personnel and patients alike in adopting lifestyle changes can lead to the prevention of such diseases.

These awareness campaigns aim to educate people about hypertension and promote healthy lifestyles as part of the National Programme for Prevention of Non-Communicable Diseases.
