Huawei Targets 100,000 App Downloads for Harmony Operating System Amid US Blacklist
Shenzhen, China - Huawei, one of the world's leading tech giants, announced its ambitious goal to secure over 100,000 app downloads for its Harmony operating system in the coming months. The company aims to achieve self-reliance in technology by creating a mature ecosystem that meets consumers' basic needs.
Speaking at a conference on WeChat, Huawei Chairman Xu Zhijun revealed that the company has already developed more than 15,000 apps based on Harmony, but now seeks to attract boutique and personalised applications to broaden its user base. According to Xu, achieving this milestone is crucial for the ecosystem's growth and will be a key objective over the next six to 12 months.
Huawei launched its operating system five years ago in response to US sanctions that cut off support from Google's Android. The company has since developed an open-source version of Harmony, which it will continue to invest in, as Xu noted, "for no operating system is complete if no one uses it."
The China-US tensions, heightened by President-elect Donald Trump's threats to take a tougher stance on China, have underscored the urgency for Huawei to develop its own technologies. The company has been working diligently to enrich app offerings and encourage developers to use Harmony as their operating system.
Xu urged consumers to be patient with the system's immaturity, assuring that "the more people use it, the more quickly it will become mature." He also emphasized Huawei's commitment to developing the Harmony ecosystem, saying, "no way back leads to victory," highlighting the company's resolve to succeed despite US sanctions.
With over 100,000 app downloads as its target, Huawei is optimistic about achieving maturity in its system and becomes a vital player in China's technology landscape.
