Honda Amaze Pioneers Safety Tech in Sub-4m Sedan Segment
The new 2024 Honda Amaze has been making waves in the Indian automobile market with its impressive lineup of features, one of which is advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). The subcompact sedan has become the first and only vehicle of its kind to boast such cutting-edge safety technology. In this article, we delve into our experience with the ADAS features on the Honda Amaze and explore its capabilities in real-world driving conditions.
First-Hand Experience
During our test drive of the new Amaze, we had the opportunity to put four of its ADAS features through their paces. These included adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, automatic emergency braking (AEB), and road departure mitigation system. Our hands-on experience revealed mixed results from these advanced safety systems.
The adaptive cruise control feature, which allows the car to adjust its speed in response to traffic conditions, worked seamlessly without any hiccups. It maintained a safe following distance of approximately 2 car lengths from the lead vehicle and smoothly transitioned to regular cruise control when the road ahead was clear.
However, issues arose with the lane keep assist feature, which struggled to stay consistently within the markings on curved roads. The system would occasionally drift out of its designated path, making it a concern for safe driving.
In contrast, our experience with AEB was overwhelmingly positive. It effectively detected obstacles on the road and automatically applied the brakes to avoid collisions. This feature also recognized pedestrians and animals, ensuring that animals did not get left behind during city traffic.
Other Safety Features
While we tested four ADAS features, the new Amaze is equipped with an extensive range of other safety systems, including six airbags, traction control, hill hold assist, rearview camera, and LaneWatch cameras. These additional features contribute to its comprehensive safety profile, providing occupants with enhanced protection on the road.
Powertrain Options
The 2024 Honda Amaze powers a 1.2-liter naturally aspirated petrol engine producing 90 PS and 110 Nm of torque. The engine is paired with either a five-speed manual transmission or a seven-step CVT automatic gearbox, catering to different driving needs.
Price and Rivals
Honda has set the on-road price of the Amaze at Rs 8 lakh to Rs 10.90 lakh (introductory). In its segment, it competes against sub-4m sedans such as the Maruti Dzire, Hyundai Aura, and Tata Tigor.
