Hitachi Rail Partners with Invest Ontario in C$100 Million CBTC Technology Enhancement: Boosting Global Urban Transit Efficiency

Toronto, ON - In a major push to enhance its Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC) signaling technology, Hitachi Rail has announced a collaboration with Invest Ontario, involving an investment exceeding C$100 million.

Hitachi Rail is upgrading its SelTracTM (G9) system by incorporating artificial intelligence (AI), 5G communication technologies, and both edge and cloud computing to reduce operational costs, decrease the carbon footprint, and improve the passenger experience globally. The upgraded system will enable urban rail transportation operators worldwide to enhance their services and operate more efficiently.

As a result of this investment, Hitachi Rail plans to expand its employee base in Toronto, Ontario, creating 100 new jobs and maintaining 1,000 specialized positions at their York Mills office, particularly in R&D and engineering. The expansion is a major win for the province's tech sector, which is known for its expertise in AI, automation, and connectivity.

"The over $100 million investment in the next generation of our world-leading SelTracTM technology is hugely exciting – and we are grateful to the Government of Ontario and Invest Ontario for their support," said Ziad Rizk, Managing Director, Urban Rail Signalling, Hitachi Rail. "By integrating AI, 5G, edge and cloud computing, our system will allow urban rail transportation operators around the globe to improve passenger journeys and operate more efficiently."

This collaboration is a significant step forward for hitachi Rail, which has already deployed its pioneering moving block CBTC signaling system, SelTracTM, on over 100 lines in 40 major cities worldwide. Ontario's smart mobility capabilities make it an ideal location for Hitachi Rail to develop innovative digital solutions for urban rail and metro systems.

The York Mills office is Hitachi Rail's hub for engineering excellence, featuring cutting-edge labs, testing areas, and simulation facilities. The expansion of this office will enhance the company's ability to deliver significant transit infrastructure projects in Canada and globally.

Ontario Government Leaders React to the Investment

"This over $100 million investment in next-generation technology from Hitachi Rail is a testament to Ontario's strengths in future technologies that are transforming industries," said Vic Fedeli, Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade. "We're proud to support hitachi Rail's growth and expansion in our province."

Additionally, Prabmeet Sarkaria, Minister of Transportation, praised the investment, stating that it aligns with the Ontario government's vision for a comprehensive transit network. Jennifer Block, Interim CEO of Invest Ontario, also welcomed the investment, saying it illustrates the province's expertise in cutting-edge technologies.

Hitachi Rail's C$100 Million Investment: Boosting Economic Growth and Jobs

The expansion contributes to Hitachi Rail's increasing footprint in Canada, with approximately 1,200 employees involved in key transit projects across Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal, and Ottawa. The investment will facilitate hitachi Rail's delivery of significant transit infrastructure projects, such as the Ontario Line and Hurontario.

In essence, this partnership represents a win-win for Ontario, providing a boost to its economy and creating new opportunities for job growth and development in the tech sector.
