High Court Bench at Kurnool to be Set Up in Andhra Pradesh

Amaravati: The Andhra Pradesh Assembly on Thursday unanimously passed a resolution urging the Centre to set up a High Court bench at Kurnool, a long-pending demand of the people in the region.

The resolution was tabled by Minister for Law N.M. Farooq and passed without any opposition. Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu stated that the new bench would be established as early as possible to address the demand raised by the people of Kurnool.

Naidu alleged that his government is committed to the development of Kurnool, contrary to the previous government's neglect of the region. The Chief Minister also assured the House that the Andhra Pradesh State Human Rights Commission (APSHRC) and Lok Ayukta will continue to function from Kurnool despite protests by lawyers against their proposed shifting to Amaravati.

The resolution has been sent to the Centre for its consent, following which the state cabinet had decided to set up a permanent bench of the High Court in Kurnool. The Minister for Law stated that there are similar arrangements in other states where high courts have benches in different locations.

Following a previous promise made by then-DP president Chandrababu Naidu during the 'Prajagalam' program before the Assembly elections, this resolution marks a significant turn for people of Kurnool after years of demanding a High Court bench.
