headlines: GMCH Jammu's Dr Sushil Sharma Promotes Integrated Approach to Addressing Substance Abuse Through Science and Religion
JAMMU, DEC 22
A day-long cardiac awareness-cum-health check-up camp was organized by the Head Department of Cardiology at GMC Jammu, with a focus on fostering a healthy lifestyle and reducing morbidity and socioeconomic burden. The event was initiated by Dr Sushil Sharma, who emphasized the importance of integrating science and religion in addressing substance abuse.
At the camp, Dr Sharma discussed how science views substance abuse as a medical condition, while many faith traditions see addiction as a manifestation of spiritual disconnection or moral failing. He noted that despite the contributions of both science and religion, challenges arise when trying to integrate their approaches for treatment, such as stigma associated with addiction.
Dr Sharma emphasized the importance of collaboration across disciplines in addressing complex issues like substance abuse and cardiac diseases. Science and religion offer distinct yet complementary perspectives, and a holistic approach can create effective treatment plans that address not just physical and psychological aspects but also moral and spiritual dilemmas facing individuals.
The camp was attended by Dr Venkatesh Yellupu, Dr Dhaneshwer Kapoor, paramedics, and volunteers from GMC Jammu. Dr Sharma expressed his gratitude to everyone who participated in the event, stressing that a collaborative approach is essential for creating holistic care models.
This event serves as an example of the Head Department of Cardiology's commitment to raising awareness about health-related issues and promoting cross-cultural understanding. As Dr Sharma noted, "Integration of science and religion can provide comprehensive approaches to tackling substance abuse and other complex challenges."
