Government Set to Launch 'One Nation One Election' Initiative with Proposed Bill in Parliament
New Delhi, [Current Date] - The government is gearing up to launch its ambitious "One Nation One Election" initiative, which promises to revolutionize the electoral landscape of India. According to sources cited by NDTV, the Cabinet has already approved the Ram Nath Kovind Committee's report on the matter, paving the way for a parliamentary bill to be introduced during this session.
The government aims to build consensus on the bill and may refer it to a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) for in-depth discussions. While the details of the bill are still under wraps, sources reveal that one of the proposed amendments will focus on addressing the simultaneous end of terms for the Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies.
As part of its "one nation, one election" initiative, the government has already accepted recommendations to conduct simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha, state assemblies, and local bodies in a phased approach. The high-level committee's report submitted to the government in March recommended implementing the concept in two phases, further solidifying its commitment to this mission.
However, there remains uncertainty on the number of bills the government plans to introduce for conducting simultaneous elections across the country. Despite the lack of clarity, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been a strong advocate for the initiative, calling for an end to frequent elections that he believes hinder the country's progress.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been pushing for parallel polls since its rise to power in 2014, with the NITI Aayog supporting the proposal in 2017. Even President Ram Nath Kovind brought up the matter in his address to the joint session of Parliament last year, further strengthening the government's case.
With the launch of this initiative, India is set to embark on a significant electoral reform, which promises to modernize its voting system and streamline the conduct of elections across the country.
