Srinagar, November 10, 2024: In a significant announcement today, Satish Sharma, the Minister for Youth Services and Sports, declared the government's commitment to establishing top-tier sports facilities in Jammu and Kashmir and fostering local sports talent. This statement was made during his visit to the concluding match of the Talent Hunt U-19 Cricket Tournament at Safapora in Ganderbal district.
Addressing the media, Minister Sharma highlighted the government's strategy to boost sports culture across J&K. "We are dedicated to enhancing sports infrastructure as per the Chief Minister’s vision. Soon, we will also focus on promoting water sports at Manasbal Lake," he said.
The event, organized by the Friends Humanitarian Trust, showcased the region's cricketing enthusiasm, with 16 teams competing from June through November 2024. The tournament not only provided a competitive platform but also highlighted the need for improved sports facilities.
Acknowledging the challenges faced by the sports sector in J&K over the last decade, Minister Sharma noted that it would require concerted efforts to bridge the gaps. "The government is committed to this cause," he assured.
Further, he announced the introduction of the Chief Minister’s Cup in every constituency, covering a range of popular sports. "We will also organize marathons in each area to promote fitness and discover local talent," Sharma added.
At the event, Minister Sharma took the opportunity to engage with the young cricketers, distributing trophies, certificates, sports kits, and cash prizes to the participants. The organizers and the local Under-15 cricket team were also honored with sports equipment, recognizing their efforts in nurturing young talent.
This initiative marks a pivotal step towards not only improving the sports infrastructure but also in elevating J&K's sports culture, ensuring that the region's youth have ample opportunities to excel in various sports disciplines.
