JAMMU, November 12: Minister for Youth Services and Sports, Satish Sharma, declared open the fencing championship at the University of Jammu as part of the 68th National School Games, a prestigious event being held across India.
Sharma emphasized the government's commitment to promoting genuine sports talent while ensuring that no individual or group misuses sports bodies for personal gains. He assured that only deserving athletes will be supported and those who have exploited sports organizations for their advantage will face consequences.
The Minister attributed the National School Games as a vital platform for school athletes to showcase their talent and participate in national competitions, providing opportunities for exposure, discipline, and competitive spirit development. Sharma stressed that the games also encourage youth to adopt a healthy lifestyle and contribute to the overall development of their personalities.
Gratitude was extended to parents, coaches, and sports teachers for their unwavering support of young athletes, whose involvement is crucial to the success of such events. The government's focus on promoting talent and sports infrastructure in Jammu & Kashmir will be enhanced under the leadership of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.
Sharma expressed hope that with the guidance of the Prime Minister and Lieutenant Governor, and coordination with the Sports Ministry, a new era of evolved sports culture will begin in J&K, equipped with modern facilities that enable players to perform better at national and international levels. The benefits of sports were highlighted as essential for shaping well-rounded individuals, engaging youth, and diverting them from the negative impacts of excessive mobile use and sedentary lifestyles.
Secetary YS&S, Sarmad Hafeez, expressed confidence in the successful completion of remaining three national championships, attributing the Department's efforts to nurture the state's sports talent and instilling values such as leadership, discipline, and perseverance. The inaugural ceremony commenced with a warm welcome address by the Director General of YS&S, Rajinder Singh Tara.
Other officials including Joint Director Jammu, Deputy Director, Central YS&S, and Director of Sports at University of Jammu were also in attendance.
