Government Launches 'One Nation One Subscription' Scheme to Boost Indian Research Ecosystem
Mumbai, India - In a move aimed at strengthening research, learning, and knowledge, the Modi Cabinet has launched the ambitious "One Nation One Subscription" (ONOS) scheme. This central initiative will provide country-wide access to high-quality research articles and journal publications on a single subscription to state and central universities.
The government has allocated Rs 6000 crore for this scheme over three consecutive years, with a focus on maximizing access to quality education for all Indian youths. This move is expected to not only improve the ranking of Indian institutions in global academic rankings but also promote interdisciplinary studies.
This digitalized platform will be user-friendly and accessible to government higher education institutions, R&D laboratories of the central government, and over 6,300 institutions that account for nearly 1.8 crore students, researchers, and faculty members. The term "INFLIBNET" stands for Information and Library Network, an autonomous inter-university centre of the University Grants Commission (UGC) that will coordinate with these institutions.
PM Narendra Modi described this scheme as a "game-changer" for Indian academia and youth empowerment. He stated, "ONOS is an initiative to strengthen our efforts to become a hub for research, learning, and knowledge. It will also encourage interdisciplinary studies." With the launch of ONOS, India is expected to experience a significant boost in its research ecosystem.
The government has set clear objectives for this scheme, which includes promoting core as well as interdisciplinary research across the country. Anushandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF) initiative that promotes research and development across government universities, colleges, research institutions, and R&D laboratories will also provide additional support to this endeavor.
As India continues to strengthen its academic presence globally, this scheme is expected to play a pivotal role in shaping the country's research landscape. With ONOS, the future of Indian academia and youth empowerment looks brighter than ever.
