GOA LEADING BY EXAMPLE WITH UNIFORM CIVIL CODE AND ONE NATION ONE ELECTION: PRAMOD SAWANT
PANAJI, 15 FEBRUARY (AFP): Chief Minister of Goa Pramod Sawant emphasized the importance of implementing Uniform Civil Code and One Nation One Election to ensure harmony among Indians and prevent any crisis like in Pakistan or Bangladesh.
At the inauguration ceremony of the year-long celebration of India's Constitution, Sawant expressed his support for a single civil code that would apply uniformly across all states. "Goa was the first state to implement UCC, and we have set an example for other states," he said. "By following our Constitution, we can ensure real justice for our people."
Sawant also stressed on the need for One Nation One Election where everyone is treated equally, adding that there should be no disparity in treatment of citizens living in different regions.
Retired Chief Justice Siddharth Mridul took a poignant call to action towards maintaining cleanliness of Goa's beaches. He urged Goans to take collective responsibility towards reducing plastic waste and asked the Union government to enact legislation on sanitation and cleanliness, arguing that public health falls under concurrent jurisdiction.
When questioned about India's crisis situation, particularly with neighboring countries Pakistan and Bangladesh, Sawant asserted, "Everyone knows the situation in those countries, as they've plunged into chaos. But if we don't adopt democratic values like our country, we risk falling into the same trap."
Sawant emphasized that uniform civil codes won't solve everything but by following constitutional guidelines, we can foster an environment of mutual respect and understanding among citizens.
Goa's state government will continue to lead the way in implementing innovative ideas to ensure better governance and equality within the nation.
