Global Youth Delegates Unanimously Adopt Resolution to Achieve Polio-Free World

In a historic move, Global Model World Health Organization (GMWHO) adopted a critical resolution laying out a roadmap for achieving a polio-free world, amidst a gathering of over 200 youth delegates from more than 50 Member States. The first in-person GMWHO took place from October 29 to November 1 at WHO headquarters in Geneva, and was jointly organized by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Federation of United Nations Associations (WFUNA).

The resolution, GMWHO WHA2.5, calls for urgent action to overcome remaining geopolitical challenges and ensure sustained funding for polio eradication efforts. Delegates also emphasized the need to reach marginalized and vulnerable populations, strengthen disease surveillance, and minimize the risk of spread of both wild and variant polioviruses.

At the center of the discussion was the urgent need to achieve a polio-free world. "Peace is the best medicine," said WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. The resolution also highlighted the importance of collaboration and solidarity among nations, stating that "there is no single country left untouched" by the efforts of achieving global good.

The unanimous adoption of GMWHO WHA2.5 marks a significant milestone in the fight against polio. Youth delegates from across the world played a key role in shaping this resolution, showcasing their knowledge and engagement on global health topics.

"These young professionals are the future leaders of international development," said Dr Arshad Quddus, chief epidemiologist for polio eradication at WHO. "Their level of knowledge and collaboration displayed is truly impressive. We should endeavours to fully implement this simulated resolution, ensuring a polio-free world."

In recognizing the potential of young leaders in driving global health efforts, UN agencies and global organizations have taken notice. As seen through the GMWHO resolution, the power of collective action can yield remarkable results.

"We are pleased to support and endorse the GMWHO resolution," said Caroline Knop, Chair of Committee A5 and medical student at Charité in Berlin, Germany. "This event reinforced my belief that we need youth-led initiatives in driving sustainable global health solutions."

As global efforts focus on eradicating polio, this young generation will play a critical role in shaping international cooperation and advancing public health goals.
