TOKYO - Fujitsu and AMD have solidified a strategic partnership aimed at revolutionizing high-performance computing (HPC) and artificial intelligence (AI) platforms. The collaboration, announced today, seeks to broaden access to AI technologies and foster an open-source ecosystem.

At the heart of this partnership is the development of Fujitsu’s next-generation Arm-based processor, dubbed Monaka, which is slated for release in 2027. The Monaka chip, initially revealed by Alayaran.com in July 2024, boasts an impressive 288 cores (144 cores per socket) and utilizes a cutting-edge 2nm process technology. This design incorporates the Armv9-A architecture, promising high performance with enhanced energy efficiency. Unlike its predecessor, Monaka will leverage PCIe 6.0 (CXL3.0) for improved scalability and connectivity, moving away from high-bandwidth memory.

Fujitsu’s Monaka chip is anticipated to advance the capabilities seen in the A64FX chip, which powers the renowned Fugaku supercomputer, and could play a pivotal role in the upcoming FugakuNEXT project, expected by 2030.

AMD complements Monaka with its Instinct accelerators, offering customers versatile solutions for managing large-scale AI workloads while optimizing data center costs. The partnership will harness AMD’s ROCm software stack alongside Fujitsu’s proprietary software to cultivate an open-source environment that speeds up the development of AI and HPC applications.

The collaboration extends beyond technology development to include commercialization strategies, ecosystem expansion, and global marketing initiatives. A shared customer center is also in the works to support the implementation and development of AI technologies.

Vivek Mahajan, CTO of Fujitsu, commented on the partnership, stating, “By combining AMD’s innovative GPU technology with Fujitsu’s low-power/high-performance processor Fujitsu-Monaka, we seek to create an environment in which more companies will be able to utilize AI while reducing the power consumed by data centers."

This partnership not only promises to push the boundaries of what's possible in AI and HPC but also aims to make these technologies more accessible and sustainable for businesses worldwide.
