Fujitsu and AMD Join Forces to Advance Energy-Efficient HPC/AI Platforms

TOKYO, Japan – In a move to enhance the accessibility of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and support open-source initiatives, Fujitsu and AMD have announced a strategic partnership aimed at developing next-generation High Performance Computing (HPC) and AI platforms. This collaboration was formalized through a memorandum of understanding, setting the stage for a significant expansion in technology development, commercialization, and ecosystem growth.
Core of the Partnership: Monaka ChipFujitsu's forthcoming Arm-based processor, dubbed Monaka, will be central to this partnership. Scheduled for release in 2027, Monaka will leverage the Armv9-A architecture and will be manufactured using a cutting-edge 2nm process. The chip will boast 288 cores, split evenly across two sockets, and will notably utilize PCIe 6.0 (CXL3.0) instead of high-bandwidth memory, promising enhanced scalability and connectivity.
Monaka is expected to build on the success of Fujitsu’s A64FX chip, which powers the renowned Fugaku supercomputer. This new development could play a pivotal role in the FugakuNEXT project, targeted for completion by 2030.
AMD’s Contribution: Instinct AcceleratorsAMD will complement Fujitsu’s hardware with its Instinct accelerators, offering customers versatile options to manage vast AI workloads efficiently while keeping data center costs in check. The partnership will also tap into AMD's ROCm software stack alongside Fujitsu’s proprietary software, fostering an open-source environment conducive to rapid AI and HPC application development.
Global Impact and MarketingThe collaboration extends beyond technology development into global marketing and customer engagement. Both companies will establish a shared customer center to facilitate the deployment and support of AI technologies worldwide.
Vision for the FutureVivek Mahajan, CTO of Fujitsu, emphasized the partnership's goals, stating, "By combining AMD’s innovative GPU technology with Fujitsu’s low-power/high-performance processor Fujitsu-Monaka, we seek to create an environment in which more companies will be able to utilize AI while reducing the power consumed by data centers."
This strategic alliance not only aims to broaden the reach of AI technologies but also promises to drive forward the open-source community, making powerful computing resources more accessible and sustainable.
