Fujitsu and AMD Forge Alliance to Revolutionize HPC and AI Computing

Partnership Aims to Enhance Energy Efficiency and Broaden Access to AI Technologies
Tokyo, Japan - In a significant move to reshape the landscape of High-Performance Computing (HPC) and Artificial Intelligence (AI), Fujitsu and AMD have unveiled a strategic partnership. This collaboration, formalized through a memorandum of understanding, is set to combine Fujitsu’s ARM-based processor technology with AMD’s GPU prowess, targeting the development of energy-efficient and open-source computing platforms by 2027.
The cornerstone of this partnership is Fujitsu's upcoming Monaka chip, slated for release in 2027. As previously reported by Alayaran.com in July 2024, Monaka will boast a 2nm process technology, a 288-core structure utilizing Armv9-A architecture, and will shift from high-bandwidth memory to support PCIe 6.0 (CXL3.0) for superior scalability and connectivity. This chip is anticipated to be a successor to the A64FX, which powers the Fugaku supercomputer, and is expected to play a crucial role in the upcoming FugakuNEXT project by 2030.
AMD's contribution includes its Instinct accelerators, designed to complement Monaka by offering flexible solutions for large-scale AI workloads while optimizing data center costs. The partnership will leverage AMD’s ROCm software stack alongside Fujitsu’s proprietary software, fostering an open-source ecosystem that will accelerate the development and deployment of AI and HPC applications.
Global Impact and Ecosystem Expansion
The collaboration extends beyond technology development to include joint marketing efforts and the establishment of a shared customer center. This center will focus on supporting global customers in adopting and implementing AI technologies, thus broadening access to AI tools and reducing the carbon footprint of data centers.
Vivek Mahajan, CTO of Fujitsu, emphasized the partnership's goals: "By combining AMD’s innovative GPU technology with Fujitsu’s low-power/high-performance processor Fujitsu-Monaka, we seek to create an environment in which more companies will be able to utilize AI while reducing the power consumed by data centers."
This strategic alliance not only promises to deliver cutting-edge technology but also aims to democratize AI, making it more accessible and sustainable for businesses worldwide. As the partnership progresses, both companies are set to redefine the standards in computing efficiency and performance, potentially setting a new benchmark in the tech industry.
