Mangaluru: In a heartening initiative aimed at boosting the health and wellbeing of construction workers, Credai Mangaluru in association with Father Muller Medical College Hospital (FMMCH) has organized an in-house free medical camp at the hospital's OPD. The event, which marked the first project under a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two entities, catered to over 400 construction workers, providing them with essential health screenings, routine investigations, and medications at zero cost.
The medical camp, held on Sunday, provided an opportunity for workers to receive consultations, basic check-ups, and essential medications without incurring any financial burden. The event also facilitated access to more advanced investigations and inpatient services at subsidized rates. Rev. Fr. Richard Aloysius Coelho, Director of Father Muller Charitable Institutions (FMCI), graciously presided over the ceremony.
Notable among the guests was D.B. Mehta, former IRS officer and Managing Director of Allergo Ventures, who addressed the gathering and stressed the importance of the initiative. He pointed out that eight years ago, Credai Mangaluru had envisioned such a project for construction workers, but organizational changes and the Covid-19 pandemic hindered its realization. He commended local builders for already providing relatively better facilities to their workforce.
The Labour Officer of the Dakshina Kannada Subdivision, Kumar B.R., highlighted the significance of health initiatives aimed at enhancing welfare of construction workers. He mentioned the government's endeavors to enhance the lives of such workers by offering reimbursement for health camps and introducing mobile health clinics – specialized vehicles that provide healthcare services directly at job sites.
Rev. Fr. Richard Aloysius Coelho, in his presidential address, underscored the importance of adhering to statutory health requirements for laborers. He urged workers to prioritize their health, emphasizing the significance of a healthy workforce for a productive industry.
This meaningful initiative is likely to uplift the lives of thousands of construction workers across Mangaluru and beyond. Credai Mangaluru's collaboration with FMMCH demonstrates the importance of corporate social responsibility in fostering healthier communities.
