Former CJI Ranjan Gogoi Supports Uniform Civil Code, 'One Nation, One Election' Proposal

Surat, Gujarat: Former Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi on Sunday emphasized the importance of implementing a uniform civil code in India, calling it a "very progressive piece of legislation" that will bring national integration and social justice.

Gogoi expressed his support for the "One Nation, One Election" proposal during the 'Surat Litfest 2025' event here. He stated that frequent polls affect governance, strain administration, finance, and cause election fatigue.

According to Gogoi, the Uniform Civil Code will establish a single set of personal laws for all citizens, regardless of their faith, and apply to matters like marriage, divorce, adoption, inheritance, and maintenance. He argued that UCC is not in conflict with Article 25 and 26 of the Indian Constitution, which guarantees the right to religion.

In Goa, where the civil code has been implemented, Gogoi mentioned that it has worked well, but pointed out the need for consensus building and countering misinformation. He stressed the importance of building public awareness about UCC before implementing it.

On the "One Nation, One Election" proposal, Gogoi cited former President Ram Nath Kovind's opinion on the matter, stating that frequent polls negatively impact governance. The proposal aims to reduce election fatigue by holding one nationwide poll every five years instead of numerous state-level elections throughout the year.

Regarding the pendency of cases in India's judicial system, Gogoi expressed concern over the 5 crore pending cases and 45 crore individuals stuck in litigation. He emphasized that finding a solution is not impossible but requires awareness and efforts from all stakeholders.

Gogoi also called for a overhaul of the judicial appointment process through the collegium system and recommended getting "good people" to become judges, focusing on compassion, kindness, and a mission-driven approach.

The former CJI's comments come just days before the BJP's national convention, where the party is expected to reaffirm its commitment to implementing a uniform civil code.
