Foggy Weather Brings Delhi to a Standstill: Several Trains and Flights Delayed
New Delhi, Dec 22 - A thick layer of fog engulfed India's capital on Friday, bringing several trains and flights at the Indira Gandhi International Airport to a standstill. The minimum temperature in the city recorded by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) was 11 degrees Celsius.
Visually, the streets around iconic landmarks like ITO, India Gate, Dhaula Kuan, and Kartavya Path were shrouded in fog with zero visibility. As a precautionary measure, people took shelter in camps set up by the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) across the city.
"We have provided all necessary facilities to those seeking shelter here," said the manager of one of the camps. "If anyone from outside needs our help, we welcome them with open arms."
Meanwhile, air quality in the city turned hazardous, with an Air Quality Index (AQI) reading of 207 at 7 am today as reported by the Central Pollution Control Board.
The flight delays have caused significant disruptions to travelers and airlines operating from New Delhi. Several rail services were also affected due to the foggy conditions.
The IMD has warned of further foggy weather in the region over the next few days, with some advisories issued for specific areas around the capital. The government is urging citizens to take necessary precautions during this period.
The poor air quality and dense fog are expected to pose health risks to residents and visitors alike. Authorities have advised people to stay indoors and follow all safety guidelines to minimize exposure.
As of now, the Met department continues to monitor the situation closely, providing updates on weather conditions across Delhi-NCR.
