BANGKOK (Alayaran.com) - At least 35 people were killed and 43 injured when a driver intentionally rammed his car into pedestrians at a sports center in the southern Chinese city of Zhuhai on Monday, police said. The incident occurred on the eve of the country's premier aviation exhibition by the People's Liberation Army.
According to police, they had detained a 62-year-old man, identified only as Fan, following the incident. Investigations are ongoing, but no motive has been disclosed. Videos shared by social media users showed multiple victims lying on the ground after the car crash, with some people reportedly suffering broken limbs.
The sports center, which attracts hundreds of residents for running and other activities, remains closed until further notice. Chinese internet censors have also taken steps to censor posts about the incident on online platforms, with Weibo search results showing limited information.
This is not the first attack in China targeting random civilians. In October, a 50-year-old man was detained after allegedly using a knife to attack children at school in Beijing, resulting in five injuries. In September, three people were killed in a knife attack at a Shanghai supermarket.
Experts say the recent surge in attacks with unclear motives has raised concerns about national security and public safety. Authorities have appealed for calm and vowed to investigate the cause of the latest incident.
