EU Launches Transnational Call for Research into Moderate and Late Stages of Neurodegenerative Diseases

Brussels, Belgium - The European Union Joint Programme - Neurodegenerative Disease Research (JPND) initiative has launched a call for research proposals that focus on improving the well-being of people with neurodegenerative diseases at moderate and late stages.

This move aims to address the growing need to better understand the disease-related individual requirements and to improve the quality of life of patients as their neurodegenerative conditions progress. Currently, interventions and support available are mostly tailored for early-stage disease management, but there is a clear gap in research into supporting those who require it more.

"It's essential that we prioritize the needs of people with neurodegenerative diseases as they advance towards moderate and late stages," said Dr. Jane Smith, Chair of JPND. "We need to identify evidence-based solutions that can help our healthcare systems across Europe provide better support and care for these individuals."

The project will encourage innovative, multi-disciplinary research that adopts social sciences and humanities approaches. This is crucial, as the availability and accessibility of support services vary greatly across countries.

"JPND is committed to bridging this gap through its transnational call," Dr. Smith added. "We want to gather insights from experts across Europe and beyond on the experiences and needs of patients, carers, and relatives living with neurodegenerative diseases."

The application process for pre-proposals is open until 12:00h C.E.T. on March 4, 2025, via an electronic submission tool.

Timeline:

  • Pre-proposal submissions due: March 4, 2025 (12:00h C.E.T.)
  • Full proposal applications will follow
