Egypt Secures Significant Boost in Health Cooperation with Global Fund Partnership

Genoa – The Arab Republic of Egypt has today signed a major framework agreement with the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, marking a significant milestone in strengthening the country's health system.

The landmark partnership, coordinated by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), aims to bolster Egypt's national response to HIV and tuberculosis, as well as mitigate the impact of COVID-19 on its healthcare infrastructure. This long-term collaboration underscores Egypt's commitment to providing resilient healthcare services for vulnerable communities.

As part of the agreement, UNDP will serve as the Principal Recipient, working closely with the Ministry of Health and Population, civil society organizations, and other partners to deliver crucial prevention and diagnostic services. This comprehensive partnership is set to prioritize access to care, improve early detection and treatment, and enhance collaboration between government representatives and global health institutions.

According to Egyptian officials, this new framework underlines Egypt's unwavering dedication to battling HIV and tuberculosis among vulnerable populations. Dr. Mohamad Hassany, Assistant Minister of Health and Population for Public Health Initiatives and Projects, stated that "we are committed to protecting the health and well-being of people across Egypt... With the global fund's support, we will continue to improve access to essential healthcare and uphold the right to health for all Egyptians."

Meanwhile, Catherine Fall Sow, Head of the Africa and Middle East Department at the Global Fund, praised the partnership, saying "We are pleased to deepen our collaboration with Egypt and support its resilient health system... This agreement reinforces our pledge to assist Egypt's health sector in key investment areas, focusing on critical diseases such as tuberculosis and HIV."

UNDP Resident Representative Alessandro Fracassetti added that the organization has already made significant strides since 2019, serving as the Principal Recipient of Global Fund grants, enabling delivery of targeted HIV and TB services to vulnerable populations. "This partnership supports immediate health needs, builds resilience and capacity for future challenges, and ensures essential services reach those who need them most," he noted.

These efforts will not only bolster Egypt's health infrastructure but also benefit its citizens and provide essential healthcare services to refugees and migrants seeking refuge in the country.
