Early Detection and Treatment Key to Saving Lives from Brain Tumors

Mumbai, Dec 2023: With the alarming number of brain tumors affecting millions worldwide, doctors stress the importance of early detection and prompt treatment. According to Dr Nitin Dange, head of department and director of interventional neurology, stroke care, and neurosurgery at Gleneagles Hospital Parel, Mumbai, timely intervention can significantly improve survival rates and quality of life for patients with brain tumors.

Brain tumors, which are abnormal growths of cells in or around the brain, can be benign or malignant. If left untreated, they can lead to serious complications and affect one's ability to perform daily activities. The risk factors include family history, prolonged exposure to radiation, weak immunity, genetic conditions like neurofibromatosis, smoking, and certain environmental exposures.

Early detection is crucial as symptoms of brain tumors are non-specific and can be easily misdiagnosed. According to Dr Dange, watch out for persistent headaches, nausea, blurred or double vision, seizures, memory problems, changes in speech or behavior, weakness or numbness in parts of the body, and difficulty with balance or coordination.

Timely diagnosis is necessary to prevent permanent brain damage, loss of speech, movement, or vision, seizure disorders, personality changes, and risk of cancer spreading. "Advanced imaging techniques like MRI and CT scans help doctors detect tumors accurately and initiate timely intervention," explains Dr Dange. The doctor adds that when identified early, some brain tumors can be tackled with the help of surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, or targeted treatments.

The emphasis on early detection and treatment means hope for patients and their families. According to Dr Dange, "early action allows health experts to plan an effective course of action" before the tumor causes irreversible damage."
