Dominica To Confer Highest National Award On PM Narendra Modi Amid COVID-19 Pandemic

In a significant gesture of gratitude, the Commonwealth of Dominica has announced that it will confer its highest national award, the Dominica Award of Honour, on Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in recognition of his contributions to the nation, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The award is expected to be presented by President of the Commonwealth of Dominica, Sylvanie Burton, during the upcoming India-CARICOM Summit in Georgetown, Guyana, from November 19 to 21, 2024. This move comes as a tribute to Modi's support and leadership in strengthening the relationship between India and Dominica.

In February 2021, India provided Dominica with 70,000 doses of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine, marking a significant gesture of cooperation and solidarity during a critical period. The Dominica Award of Honour not only acknowledges this gesture but also recognizes India's ongoing assistance in various sectors, including healthcare, education, and information technology.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will receive the award for his advocacy on climate resilience and sustainable development, reflecting his commitment to global collaboration on pressing issues like climate change. "He has been a true partner to Dominica, particularly during our time of need amid a global health crisis," said Roosevelt Skerrit, Prime Minister of Dominica.

At the India-CARICOM Summit, Modi will engage in discussions with Caribbean nations to explore new avenues for cooperation and strengthen ties between India and CARICOM member states. Both President Sylvanie Burton and Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit are expected to attend the summit, highlighting a key focus on future collaboration and progress.

In his response to the news, Prime Minister Modi expressed the importance of global collaboration in addressing pressing issues like climate change and geopolitical conflicts. "We stand with Dominica today and tomorrow, our partnership will continue to strengthen," he reiterated.

The upcoming India-CARICOM Summit marks a significant opportunity for India and CARICOM nations to engage on shared priorities, fostering regional cooperation and advancing progressive visions for the region's development and resilience.
