In an effort to provide clean and quality food to the people of the district, a team of the Health Department conducted raids at various places across Tanda. Led by District Health Officer Dr Jatinder Bhatia, Food Safety Officer Munish Sodhi and his team carried out checks in Tanda's Tanda area and its adjoining town of Khudda Kurala.
During the inspection, a restaurant on Jalandhar Road was checked where samples of cake and paneer were collected. The restaurant workers were directed to wear gloves and caps while preparing and serving food to avoid any contamination. "We will ensure that all vendors and restaurants follow proper hygiene and safety protocols," Dr. Bhatia said.
The team also checked a grocery shop on Jalandhar Road where they took a sample of tea leaves, found unhygienic conditions in some places. Moreover, there was an instance of contaminated jaggery being produced at Khudda Kurala which drew the attention of the team. Upon finding the same, two samples of jaggery and sugar were collected from there.
Two samples of jaggery and several other food items were sent to a local lab in Kharar for inspection after which further action will be taken based on the results. The District Health Officer warned against strict penalties under the Food Safety and Standards Act 2008 for anyone who violates the health rules, adding that shopkeepers should not sell any expired or unhygienic food items to customers.
