Diabetes and Kidney Disease: A Dangerous Duo
By Health Correspondent, Alayaran.com
Gurugram, [Date] - Experts have highlighted the perilous link between diabetes and kidney disease, emphasizing the challenges faced when managing both conditions simultaneously. According to Dr. Mohit Khirbat, a consultant in nephrology at CK Birla Hospital, Gurugram, diabetes is a primary cause of chronic kidney disease (CKD), particularly Types 1 and 2.
Dr. Khirbat explains, "Diabetes-related high blood sugar levels progressively damage the kidneys' arteries, impairing their ability to filter waste from the blood. Over time, this can lead to diabetic nephropathy, which if not managed, could advance to end-stage renal failure."
The relationship between these two diseases is not one-sided. Kidney disease also complicates diabetes management. "Kidneys play a crucial role in regulating insulin levels in the blood," Dr. Khirbat added. "In patients with CKD, the clearance of insulin is reduced, which can elevate insulin levels in the blood, potentially leading to frequent episodes of hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar, complicating the control of diabetes."
This interconnected health challenge requires a comprehensive approach to manage effectively. The interplay between diabetes and kidney disease necessitates vigilant monitoring and tailored treatment plans to prevent the worsening of either condition. Dr. Khirbat urges those with diabetes to have regular kidney function tests and for individuals with kidney issues to keep a close watch on their blood sugar levels to mitigate the risks associated with this dangerous duo.
