Dhanesh Rai Continues Ancestral Bamboo Occupation Despite Disappearing Artisans

Dharan, Jan 17: In a heartwarming display of traditional skills, Dhanesh Rai, a Bhojpur resident, has successfully continued his family's 80-year-old ancestral occupation in crafting handmade bamboo products.

Rai, who moved to Tarai from hilly areas in search of employment and later turned into an entrepreneur, said that he initially inherited his father's business, which had been built by his grandfather and ancestors. For years now, he has skillfully crafted various items like Doko, Fipi, Mandro, and other bamboo products, using a combination of traditional techniques and modern machinery.

Despite the fading interest in handmade crafts and the rise of imported goods, Rai remains resolute about carrying forward this age-old tradition. He said that his business not only helps him to feed his family but also contributes towards preserving the cultural identity of Kirant community.

"The products I make are largely influenced by our traditional culture and are made from high-quality bamboo extracted from our home gardens," he mentioned during an interview.

Rai expressed gratitude for being able to sustain himself through hard work, rather than heavily relying on investments or loans, which allows his family to maintain a level of self-reliance. Further emphasizing the significance of preserving cultural traditions, Rai stated that handmade products are particularly well-suited for fairs and festivals.
