DG-IG Conference in Bhubaneswar to Focus on New Criminal Laws, Organised Crime, and Cybercrime

BHUBANESWAR: The top police officials of the country will be discussing key issues including the implementation of three new criminal laws, organised crime, and cybercrime at a DG-IG conference to be held in Bhubaneswar from November 29.
According to sources, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to address the top cops on policing and other pressing issues. The focus this year is on policing, with an aim to improve law enforcement efforts across the country.
The three new criminal laws - Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam - were rolled out in July 31, but there are "teething issues with implementation" that will be discussed at the conference.
"Issues like human resource building and capacity building need to happen at all levels for a smooth rollout of new laws. Till those don't happen, there will be hiccups," said a DG-rank official.
The conference is also expected to focus on organisied crime, particularly its cross-border nature, with many states having their own special laws like MCOCA.
Home Minister Amit Shah has called for states to use UAPA (Unidad ACT) wherever needed and rope in the expertise of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to probe cases involving gangs like Lawrence Bishnoi.
Cybercrime is also expected to be on the agenda, with concerns about awareness among potential victims over how to register complaints and seek redressal. The conference may discuss ways to set up special cybercrime thanas for investigation and improve state's databases.
