DESY SETS SIGHT ON 3-YEAR CONSTRUCTION PROJECT TO CREATE INNOVATION HUB
Hamburg, Germany - The DESY (Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron) campus is about to undergo a significant transformation with the launch of its Innovation Factory project. Spanning over 8,500 square meters, the facility will be built across two locations: the main site on the DESY campus and Altona Innovation Park. The complex laboratory spaces, offices, and open working environments are designed to facilitate collaboration between researchers, industry experts, and start-ups.
The DESY Innovation Factory is set to become an indispensable innovation hub in Germany, providing a platform for pre-founders, start-ups, and scale-ups, as well as partners from applied research and collaborations with industry. The facility will focus on emerging technologies such as life sciences, new materials, and quantum technologies, which are crucial for addressing pressing issues of the future.
As Second Mayor of Hamburg, Katharina Fegebank, emphasizes that "the DESY Innovation Factory offers excellent conditions for founders to turn their ideas from research into practice even faster." The centre will foster a unique ecosystem in Germany by providing comprehensive networking opportunities, events, and expert advice.
The centre's objectives align with the Federal Government's strategy to promote innovative solutions in key areas. According to Melanie Leonhard, Senator for Economic Affairs and Innovation of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, "the DESY Innovation Factory will become a workbench for innovation, where bright minds and creative entrepreneurs will work together to find answers to our time - for a sustainable future and innovation through technology."
The facility is set to be completed in three years. DESY's Chief Technology Officer, Arik Willner, highlights the importance of collaboration between research and industry in identifying solutions to socially relevant challenges. "With the DESY Innovation Factory, we offer the ideal environment for new deep-tech innovations," he stated.
Helmut Dosch, Chairman of the DESY Board of Directors, adds that "the DEsy Innovation Factory will play a pivotal role in Science City Hamburg Bahrenfeld and greatly expand Germany's potential as a science and technology location." The first phase of the innovation factory is already providing resources for test-and-development purposes. It will be further expanded upon completion of this ambitious infrastructure project.
When complete, the DESY Innovation Factory is poised to become a leading hub in Germany, showcasing cutting-edge research and development capabilities that have tangible impact on our world.
