Dengue Outbreak Strikes Kozhikode's Chalappuram Area, Affects Hospital Staff and Residents

Kozhikode, October 25 - A concerning spread of dengue fever has gripped the Chalappuram area, with significant impact observed at the ESI Hospital. Since October 20, the hospital has reported 13 of its staff members, including four doctors, infected with the virus. The outbreak was initially linked to migrant workers involved in the construction of the hospital, but it has now spread to the local community.

Hospital Staff AffectedThe infected staff include not only doctors but also one nurse, two pharmacists, and two sanitation workers, indicating the severity and reach of the outbreak within the healthcare facility.

Response MeasuresUpon notification, the Kozhikode city health department took immediate action by initiating mosquito-control fogging operations around Chalappuram. Hospital staff have further requested that these operations be extended inside the hospital premises during non-operational days to curb the spread.

Community ImpactThe local residents have noted a marked increase in mosquito populations, likely exacerbated by waterlogging in the area. The community, comprising many residential units, is now calling for more aggressive mosquito control strategies to prevent further spread.

Symptoms to Watch ForDengue fever manifests through symptoms like severe headaches, joint and muscle pain, a rash similar to measles on the chest and face, persistent vomiting, and in severe cases, bleeding from the gums, abdominal pain, shortness of breath, and reduced urine output.

Prevention EffortsHealth officials are urging residents to eliminate standing water, use mosquito repellents, and wear protective clothing to prevent mosquito bites. They are also promoting community clean-up drives to reduce mosquito breeding sites.

The Kozhikode Municipal Corporation and health authorities are closely monitoring the situation, promising more robust measures to tackle the outbreak and protect both the health workers and the residents of Chalappuram.
