Dengue Outbreak Hits Kozhikode's Chalappuram, Affects Hospital Staff and Residents
Kozhikode, October 25 - The Chalappuram area in Kozhikode is currently grappling with a severe outbreak of dengue fever, which has now spread to both the medical staff at the local ESI Hospital and the surrounding community. Since October 20, a total of four doctors, one nurse, two pharmacists, and two sanitation workers at the ESI Hospital have been diagnosed with dengue, joining a growing list of affected individuals.
The outbreak was initially linked to migrant workers from other states involved in the construction of the ESI hospital, but it has quickly spread to the local population. Several residents in the vicinity of the hospital have also tested positive for the virus.
In response to the escalating situation, the city’s health department has initiated mosquito-control measures, including fogging operations in the affected area. However, due to the persistence of the problem, hospital staff have called for additional fogging within the hospital premises during off-hours.
Residents of Chalappuram have noted a significant increase in mosquito presence, which they attribute to waterlogging in the area. This has led to calls for more robust mosquito control strategies from local authorities to curb the spread of dengue.
Symptoms of Dengue:- Severe headache - Joint and muscle pain - Measles-like rash on the chest and face - Persistent vomiting - Coughing up blood - Gum bleeding - Abdominal pain - Shortness of breath - Reduced urine output - Cold extremities
The community is urged to take preventive measures against mosquito bites and to eliminate standing water where mosquitoes can breed. Local health officials are working around the clock to manage the outbreak and are encouraging anyone experiencing symptoms to seek medical attention promptly.
