Deliberate Car Ramming Kills 35, Injures 43 in Southern Chinese City
Bangkok, Nov. 13 - At least 35 people died and another 43 were injured when a 62-year-old driver intentionally plowed his car into pedestrians exercising at a sports center in the southern Chinese city of Zhuhai on Monday evening.
The incident occurred just hours before China's annual premier aviation exhibition that was scheduled to take place in the city, prompting widespread concern about increased security measures. Police have detained the suspect, identified only by his family name as Fan, and are conducting investigations into the motive behind the attack.
Eyewitnesses reported seeing a firefighter performing CPR on one of the victims at the scene, while others were forced to flee the area due to the chaos. The victims suffered severe injuries in what was described as an "unprecedented" incident in the city.
Despite being the deadliest mass-killing assault in Zhuhai since 2007, the incident has drawn heavy censorship on Chinese social media platforms. Searches for the incident on popular platforms, including Weibo and Xiaohongshu, have been rapidly scrubbed from the internet, with news outlets expressing dismay at what they described as an effort to conceal the truth.
The attack follows a series of public incidents featuring random acts of violence in China's major cities over the past two years. In September, three civilians lost their lives after assailants opened fire on a supermarket shopping mall in Shanghai.
Meanwhile, officials have confirmed that nearby schools and community centers have taken enhanced security protocols due to similar attacks in October when suspects were detained for threatening schoolchildren with knives.
