Delhi Approves Recruitment of 1,463 Healthcare Staff Amid Urgent Need for Enhanced Medical Infrastructure
Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena on Monday approved the recruitment of 701 nurses and 762 paramedical staff to bolster Delhi's struggling healthcare infrastructure. According to a statement from the Raj Niwas office, this move aims to alleviate the strain on existing medical personnel by onboardings essential workers on a direct recruitment quota with relaxed rules.
The decision comes in response to recommendations from the Dr S K Sarin Committee, which was formed after the Delhi High Court raised concerns about the city's inadequate healthcare resources and workforce. The committee identified staffing shortages, particularly among nursing and paramedical staff, as a major barrier to quality healthcare, and recommended immediate engagement of outsourced personnel to bridge this gap.
The Delhi High Court had issued a directive in February, highlighting the urgent need for substantial investments and structural reforms within government hospitals to address years of neglect and inefficiency. The court mandate also mandated the Government of the National Capital Territory of Delhi (GNCTD) to file a status report on its plans to strengthen the medical system.
The approval of this recruitment drive is seen as an effort to enhance patient care standards across Delhi's healthcare facilities, which face chronic shortages in hospital beds and medical personnel. With over 1,463 hired staff, these healthcare workers will help alleviate some of the pressure on existing medical professionals.
