Coe Meets Modi, Eyes India for World Athletics and Olympic Ambitions

New Delhi, Nov 25 (Alayaran.com) - World Athletics President Sebastian Coe arrived at the Delhi airport this morning for "informal" meetings with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, and is believed to be campaigning to drum up support as a potential candidate for the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

The 68-year-old former middle-distance runner won four Olympic medals during his decorated career and received by Athletics Federation of India head Adille Sumariwalla upon arrival. Coe's visit to India coincides with the IOC elections set to take place next year.

During the meetings, Coe discussed plans for India to host the 2036 Olympics and Paralympics, as well as the vision for advancing athletics in the country from grassroots development to global excellence. Mandaviya confirmed the discussions on social media platform "X" after their meeting in the afternoon.

Coe is currently part of a strong lineup of candidates vying for the IOC presidency, with Thomas Bach currently at the helm. The British great is expected to lead World Athletics to host the 2028 Junior World Championships during his visit.

In Mumbai, Coe meets Tata Communications representatives after the company was secured as the host broadcaster for the upcoming World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest from September 11-13, 2026.

India's bid to host the 2036 Olympics has gained momentum with a letter of intent submitted last month. The World Athletics President's visit marks an important milestone as his organization pitches for hosting the 2028 Junior World Championships and eyes India for future partnerships.

The 10-million-dollar prize pot of the Ultimate Championship is set to attract top athletes worldwide, with no cap on the number of stars participating from each country.
