Kochi: A violent clash broke out at the closing ceremony of the Kerala State School Sports meet on Tuesday, leaving students and police personnel injured. The dispute over the awarding of points escalated into a chaotic scene, with protesters demanding that the original second-place winner be reinstated.
The incident occurred in the presence of General Education Minister V. Sivankutty and Sports Minister V. Abdurahiman, who were escorted to safety by the police after the ruckus started. The conflict began when the official points table showed Kadakassery Ideal EHSS at the top with 80 points, followed by GV Raja Sports School in second place, which ignited protests from students.
However, protesters claimed that the awarding of second place was "controversial" and accused senior officials of "rigging". The police quickly took action to disperse the crowd, leading to allegations of brutality. Despite the presence of the ministers, the situation remained tense as protesters chanted slogans demanding change.
According to eyewitnesses, police personnel used force to push back students who were trying to get close to the stage where the announcement was made. Students claimed that police officers threatened them by saying "If there was no media, we would have shown you." The Kerala Police Department has assured that an investigation is underway and those responsible will be held accountable.
An inquiry into the incident has been launched to determine what led to the clash between students and security personnel. Parents of the students involved in the protest have called for peaceful resolutions and demanded transparent investigations into the matter.
The Kerala State School Sports meet is a premier event that brings together schools from across the state, highlighting their athletic prowess. However, this clash has raised concerns about the handling of high-profile events by authorities.
