City Police Stumble Upon Hoax Bomb Threat Email Sender in Othakkalmandapam
The Coimbatore city police have confirmed that an unidentified person sent multiple bomb threat emails to prominent hospitals and other establishments in Othakkalmandapam, sending shockwaves of anxiety among the authorities and patrons. The cities top medical institutions, namely Ganga Hospital, Ramakrishna Hospital, and Karpagam Hospital received the threatening emails on Tuesday morning.
A team of bomb detection and disposal squads (BDDS) was hastily mobilized by the police to conduct thorough searches of the hospitals in order to determine the authenticity of the threat. The management was assured that panic need not be triggered and investigations could begin.
Upon investigation, it emerged that this is the third such instance of a bomb threat email being sent out in the last few months, with many other schools, hotels, airports, and establishments falling prey to similar ploys.
"We are on high alert," said a senior police officer. "We've advised the healthcare unit authorities not to alarm but an aggressive search would be done." The sender of these hoax threats remains at large after evading law enforcement agencies for several months now.
According to police records, the sender utilized internet browser Tor which is notorious to keep user connections anonymous.
After conducting the investigation and declaring that all were mere hoaxes (sent maliciously pretending to be threatening but without a real danger for target), Coimbatore City Police has initiated discussions on devising more robust measures.
To further bolster their efforts, Coimbatore city police are planning to devise strategies for an upcoming "hackathon", with young and tech-savvy professionals joining together on coding initiatives in which the entire objective revolves a clever approach that can identify the real culprits behind these types of scams.
