China's Outdoor Apparel Market Sees Surge in Affluence and Demand

Shanghai, China - November 2023: The outdoor apparel market in China is experiencing a significant surge, driven by a growing base of young, affluent, and style-conscious urban consumers.

According to recent data, sales in the outdoor sports category skyrocketed during this year's Double 11 shopping festival, with Douyin reporting a 70% increase in sales compared to last year. This growth has encouraged global brands to increase their investments in China, with many major sportswear companies launching new collections and experiences.

International brands such as Peak Performance from Sweden and Goldwin from Japan are capitalizing on the trend, with both opening new stores in Shanghai. Meanwhile, US-based Keen has expanded its operations from Shanghai to other major cities across China.

E-commerce platforms like JD.com and Tmall also reported record-breaking growth, with many brands witnessing a more than 100% increase in transaction volumes. High-end outdoor brands, including Mammut, are launching urban collections, while luxury designers are collaborating with footwear labels to appeal to style-savvy consumers.

The surge in demand has attracted the attention of major sportswear giants like Nike and Adidas, both of which have expanded their presence in the outdoor category. Domestic brands such as Camel and Beneunder are also ramping up research and development to cater to increasingly discerning consumers.

Amer Sports, a global group of iconic sports and outdoor brands including Arc'teryx and Salomon, reported a 56% year-on-year revenue increase in the Chinese market during the third quarter, reaching $313 million. This growth outpaced other regions, solidifying China's position as a key market for outdoor apparel.

As the trend continues to grow, experts predict that competition will intensify in the market, with brands vying for attention from style-conscious consumers. However, for now, it seems that China's outdoor apparel market is set to remain on an upward trajectory.
