China Takes Top Spot as World's Largest Pear Producer

BEIJING, January 10, 2024 - China has solidified its position as the world's largest producer of pears by a significant margin, accounting for nearly two-thirds of global production. The country's vast pear orchards span across Hebei, Shandong, and Shaanxi provinces, making them ideal temperate climates and fertile soils necessary for growing both traditional and hybrid varieties.

According to reports from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and World Population Review (2023-2024), China produces over 18 million metric tonnes of pears annually. This surpasses neighboring countries in Asia and globally, cementing its position as a leader in pear production.

Pear cultivation holds cultural value in China, dating back to over 3,000 years ago. The fruit is highly prized domestically, often gifted during festivals and family gatherings. Unique varieties such as Ya Li and Xinjiang Fragrant Pear are particularly well-known for their juicy texture and delicate taste.

Internationally, China exports pears to countries like the United States, Argentina, Italy, Turkey, and many others. Chinese pears are renowned for their crisp texture, high water content, and subtle sweetness, making them a sought-after delicacy worldwide.

The top five pear-producing countries in the world are:

  1. China - 18 million metric tonnes
  2. United States - 0.6 million metric tonnes
  3. Argentina - 0.55 million metric tonnes
  4. Italy - 0.5 million metric tonnes
