China Sparks Panic Over Fake Claims of New Epidemic
Beijing, China - Speculative rumors about an alleged new epidemic in China are spreading rapidly on social media platforms, causing widespread panic and confusion. The assertions, particularly those shared by Chinese-registered users, claim that hospitals and crematoriums across the country are overwhelmed with patients suffering from multiple viruses, including Influenza A, HMPV (Human metapneumovirus), Mycoplasma pneumoniae, and COVID-19.
These claims have been categorically denied by Chinese health officials as well as the World Health Organization (WHO). Neither entity has recognized an epidemic or declared a state of emergency. In fact, WHO Director-General Maria Van Kerkhove reiterated the organization's call for transparency about COVID-19 origins last Monday.
According to X (formerly Twitter)-based community notice issued on January 1st, 2025, all claims regarding China declaring a state of emergency over the epidemic are unfounded and lack any supporting evidence. Users' comments calling this crisis as an impending disaster appear unwarranted upon checking facts.
The WHO emphasized its determination for data-sharing transparency to effectively address global health threats in general, especially concerning COVID-19 origins.
