China Pivotal Role in Building Global Climate Resilience Through South-South Cooperation
BEIJING, CHINA - China has been playing a pivotal role in building global climate resilience through its engagement in South-South cooperation, with many countries praising the nation's efforts in tackling climate change.
According to Ahsan Iqbal, Pakistan's Minister for Planning, Development, and Special Initiatives, his country has greatly benefited from China's partnership in developing renewable energy capabilities. During a visit to China in December, Iqbal expressed his gratitude for China's help in scaling up green energy in Pakistan.
"Thanks to our collaboration with China, Pakistan has developed renewable energy capabilities that are crucial for our country's green energy ambitions," Iqbal said.
China has completed several key projects in Pakistan, including a solar park, four wind farms, and two hydropower projects. Beijing has also helped enhance Pakistan's ability to prevent and mitigate meteorological disasters by signing an agreement on building early warning and response systems.
The cooperation is particularly important for countries like Pakistan, where glaciers are at risk of melting and generating fatal floods. The early warning system will be useful in preparing for and mitigating the effects of climate disasters, Iqbal said.
South-South cooperation has been vital for many developing countries facing climate challenges. China's support in sharing experiences is crucial, as many Global South nations make relatively low contributions to global emissions but are still in the process of industrializing.
"Given their significant populations and importance, supporting their green transition is crucial for global climate goals," said Zhang Jianyu, chief development officer of the BRI International Green Development Coalition.
Since 2016, China has provided over $24.25 billion in climate-related financial support to developing countries, with a focus on green financing and technology support.
As experts emphasize the importance of supporting countries from the Global South, many see an opportunity for green economic growth through these partnerships. "Developing countries are keen on addressing climate change and achieving economic development," said Ma Jun, director of the Beijing-based Institute of Public and Environmental Affairs.
China's experience in green energy technologies can be highly useful to these nations, with the aim of tripling global renewable energy capacity by 2030.
With its extensive support, China is taking a significant step towards building a more sustainable future for itself and other countries. As climate resilience becomes increasingly urgent, international cooperation will play a crucial role in addressing this challenge.
