Centre Approves Appointment of Patna High Court's Chief Justice Krishnan Vinod Chandran as Supreme Court Judge

New Delhi: The Centre has cleared the appointment of Patna High Court's Chief Justice Krishnan Vinod Chandran to the apex court following a recommendation from the Supreme Court Collegium.

Union Minister for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal announced the decision in a post on X, stating that the President was pleased to appoint Justice Chandran as a Supreme Court judge after consultation with the Chief Justice of India.

The President has issued a notification confirming Justice Chandran's appointment as a Supreme Court judge, effective from the date he assumes charge of his office.

In a statement explaining its recommendation, the Supreme Court Collegium noted that it considered the lack of representation on the apex court bench from the High Court of Kerala during the elevation process.

Justice Chandran has over 11 years of experience as a High Court Judge and has served as Chief Justice of Patna High Court since March 2023. His tenure is expected to bring significant expertise to the Supreme Court.

Born on April 25, 1963, Justice Chandran is ranked 13th in the combined all-India seniority list of High Court Judges. A law graduation from Kerala Law Academy Law College, he began practicing during the 1990s and previously worked as a Special Government Pleader (Taxes) for the Kerala government.

The Supreme Court Collegium deliberated on eligible candidates for appointment to the apex court in their most recent meeting.
