Centre Agrees to Set Up High Court Bench in Kurnool Amid Assembly Resolution
Amaravati, Andhra Pradesh - In a significant development, the state's legislative body, on Thursday, unanimously passed a resolution urging the Central Government to set up a High Court bench at Kurnool. The motion was tabled by Law Minister N.Md. Farooq, and it has been sent to the Centre for its assent.
Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu expressed his confidence that the High Court bench would be set up as early as possible, stating that the long-lingering demand of Kurnool's residents was finally being addressed by his government. He accused the previous governing party of neglecting the development needs of Rayalaseema region.
The resolution was passed with support from MLAs from Kurnool district and across the state's neighboring districts. Mr. Naidu assured that setting up a High Court bench is part of the promise he made during his "Prajagalam" speech just before the recent Assembly elections, vowing that the government is ready for this development.
On November 14th, it was announced that the state government plans to shift institutions such as Lok Ayukta and Andhra Pradesh State Human Rights Commission (APSHRC) from Kurnool to Amaravati. Protests arose among lawyers in response to these moves, prompting a boycott of court events on November 19.
