Bypolls in West Bengal: Sporadic Violence Reports as Polling Underway

Kolkata, West Bengal - 17th [Current Date]

Reports of sporadic violence have emerged from certain pockets in West Bengal as bypolls are being held for six Assembly constituencies across the state. The violence, which included a shootout and clashes between rival groups, has been reported in several areas, including Jagatdal, Haroa, and Naihati.

According to eyewitnesses, a shootout broke out during the early hours of polling at Jagatdal Assembly constituency in North 24 Parganas district. One person, believed to be an associate of the ruling Trinamool Congress party, received injuries in the shootout and is currently undergoing treatment at a local hospital.

Eyewitnesses also reported that crude bombs were hurled by two groups of clashing individuals, resulting in minor injuries for a couple of people.

Tension brewed in another area when the BJP candidate engaged in a heated conversation with the booth agent of the ruling Trinamool Congress party at Booth Number 200 in Sadarpur area under Haroa. This led to a confrontation between BJP and Trinamool Congress supporters, which was eventually diffused by authorities.

The Quick Response Team (QRT) of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) personnel assisted by local police officers were called to the scene to restore order.

As of 9 A.M., polling in the six constituencies has been reported at an average rate of 14.65%. The highest polls percentage is recorded from Taldangra at 18%, followed closely by Madarihat, Haroa, Naihati, Medinipur, and Sitai.

However, tensions remain high following allegations that police detained a BJP worker within his house on polling day at Medinipur. The Election Commission has sought a report from the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) in West Bengal regarding these claims.
