Bumrah Ruled Out of India Test Captaincy Race Amid Workload Concerns

Mumbai, March 20, 2023 - In a surprise move, world-class fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has opted out of the running to become the next Test captain of Team India. A report from Sky Sports revealed that Bumrah's decision was prompted by concerns over his workload management schedule, which would have made it difficult for him to commit to every practice session and series in England.
In light of this development, Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant are now in the running to replace outgoing Test captain Rohit Sharma. Sharma announced his retirement from Test cricket on May 7, just weeks ago. Even with Bumrah leading the side during the recent Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia, he was held back due to a back injury, forcing India to lose one Test.
Bumrah had captained India three times in Tests before this, including two outings in Australia and a notable win over Andrew Flintoff-led England at Perth. His selection process for the captaincy role was considered strong because of his performance under pressure during these games.
However, Bumrah's injury forced him to sit out several critical periods. Therefore, his inability to commit himself fully for an entire test series due to workload concerns led him to exclude himself from any possible consideration of taking up this new role.
The selection committee is now anticipated to meet next upcoming week to discuss the available candidates and finalize their choice.
