BSNL Plans New Technology Named D2D That Allows Direct Communication Without SIM Cards, Threatens Mukesh Ambani's Jio and Sunil Mittal's Airtel

Mumbai: State-owned telecom firm BSNL is planning to launch a new technology called Direct to Device (D2D), which allows users to make calls and send messages without needing a SIM card or traditional mobile network. This breakthrough comes as BSNL aims to compete with industry giants like Reliance Jio in remote and low-connectivity regions.

According to sources, BSNL has partnered with Viasat, a global satellite communications company, to bring this service to the masses. The technology leverages the power of satellite communication to enable phone calls and messaging without relying on conventional mobile networks. In a recent demonstration, BSNL showcased how this technology can send two-way messages using a commercial Android smartphone connected to Viasat’s satellite located 36,000 kilometers away from Earth.

The D2D technology is designed to work in areas with low or no cellular connectivity and can function on land, in the air, and even at sea. This service is highly versatile and can expand its reach to rural and underserved regions where traditional network coverage is sparse. BSNL has positioned this technology as a game-changer for emergency communication and remote connectivity.

This move by BSNL comes at a time when Reliance Jio and Sunil Mittal-led Airtel have dominated the market with affordable data plans and extensive 4G networks. However, BSNL's focus on satellite technology could serve as a threat to its competitors in regions where even Jio struggles to provide coverage.

When asked about this new technology, a spokesperson for BSNL, said, "We are excited about our new D2D technology which is set to revolutionize the way people stay connected. With this technology, we aim to bridge the connectivity gap in India's most underserved regions and provide an affordable solution to millions of Indians who lack access to mobile communication networks."

However, it remains to be seen how competitors like Jio will respond to this new frontier in the telecom landscape.
