Bollywood Star Akshay Kumar Relaxes from Canadian Citizenship Saga

Mumbai: Bollywood superstar Akshay Kumar, who faced a storm of criticism for holding Canadian citizenship despite being an active proponent of national issues in India, finally put the controversy behind him last year by relinquishing his citizenship and acquiring a new Indian passport.

In a recent conversation with media personalities at the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit 2024, Akshay candidly spoke about the pressures he faced for years over his dual nationality. Though he claimed that his decision to relinquish his Canadian citizenship was not driven by external pressure, the ordeal still left its indelible mark on him.

When asked which divine authority had facilitated his move at a strategic moment when diplomatic tensions between India and Canada were escalating, Akshay joked that it was none other than his parents' blessings. "Main chup chaap nikal gaya," he said with a grin - essentially suggesting that he managed to leave quietly without drawing undue attention.

Akshay had indeed applied for Canadian citizenship two decades ago during a tumultuous time in the media industry, when as many as 15 of his films failed at the box office consecutively. The actor's perseverance and dedication eventually paid off once again as he finally tied up with his roots.

A year since surrendering his Canadian nationality, Akshay seems to have returned home more empowered than ever, taking an opportunity to connect with his audience in a way that felt both fitting and empowering for him.
