Bhasha is just a medium, capability matters: Vikrant Massey on balancing Hindi and English journalism

In a candid interview with Firstpost's Lachmi Deb Roy, acclaimed Hindi film actor Vikrant Massey spoke about his journey in the entertainment industry, dealing with online trolls, and navigating the complexities of language in journalism. The 36-year-old actor recently starred in Netflix's Sector 36 and is set to be seen in the upcoming film The Sabarmati Report.

When asked about dealing with criticism from unqualified critics and YouTubers who claim to be journalists but lack genuine knowledge, Massey expressed frustration at their harsh and personal tactics. "I see it as a way to get better, but when it gets personal and is fueled by lack of awareness... it's below the belt," he said.

Massey emphasized that true journalism requires balance and objectivity. "There are two types of journalism: extreme right and extreme left, and then there's something in between. Balanced journalism today is rare, and if there's anything like that, we should latch on to it," he noted.

However, Massey acknowledged the dominant presence of English language media and its impact on Hindi journalism. "Bhasha (language) is just a medium, but how capable you are at your work is most important," he said humbly. "Your capability rests on your intent and talent or your gumption to fall and get up again."

The actor shared an interesting anecdote on how the language barrier affects the opportunities available to Hindi-speaking individuals. He mentioned that 80% of those appearing for the UPSC exams are English-speaking pupils, highlighting the need for more representation from regional languages.

In a lighter tone, Massey discussed his experience playing the role of a cannibal in Netflix's Sector 36. Despite initially wanting to take on the character due to its complexity, he ensured that it did not reflect his personal life and those of his loved ones.

The Sabarmati Report, another film in which Massey will soon be seen, promises an engaging exploration of history through the lens of a Hindi journalist. With a focus on balancing language and journalism, Vikrant Massey's latest ventures are sure to generate interest among fans and industry enthusiasts alike.
