Bengaluru Medical Institutions Hike User Fees, Minister Justifies Increase as 'Minimum'
Karnataka's healthcare minister Dinesh Gundu Rao has defended the recent decision to increase user fees at several state-run hospitals affiliated with Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute (BMCRI). As of November 1, the hikes have been implemented for treatment, surgeries, blood tests, scans, and other medical services at Victoria, Minto, Vani Vilas, Super Speciality, Trauma, and Emergency Care hospitals.
Rao claimed that the increases were "minimum" without placing an undue burden on citizens. The user fees in question have seen significant hikes - Rs 10 has been raised to Rs 20 and then Rs 20 increased to Rs 40 or Rs 50. Rao pointed out that these adjustments had also occurred during previous government terms.
Notably, the single-bed rates in special wards have more than doubled from Rs 750 per day to Rs 2,000, while the twin-occupancy rate has risen from Rs 700 to Rs 1,000. General ward charges have also increased by three times, from Rs 15 to Rs 50 daily.
Patients at these hospitals will face additional charges for hospital procedure fees. The hikes mark a significant shift in user fees that may impact medical seekers in the region.
